7 Spring Workouts To Enjoy Outside

St. Patrick’s Day, daylight savings, the first day of spring…March ushers in the first hints of spring, and along with it comes the urge to get outside. Edington Family Fitness is located in Ohio, and March for us means one day we’re throwing open the windows and lacing up our

running shoes to hit the trails, while the next day finds us cranking up the heat and donning our winter coats to walk the dog. But despite the drastic weather swings this time of year, we still want to get outside when the weather allows.

Being active outside has many benefits beyond what working out inside can do. Being in natural light, stimulating all five senses, and taking your mind off the hard work with the distractions outside provides all work to boost your physical output and improve your mood. According to

Franklin County Public Health, taking your workouts outside means:

 Improved mental health.

 Increased self-esteem.

 Higher levels of vitamin D - the happy vitamin.

 Greater calorie burn.

For this transitional period, Edington Family Fitness has some ideas for outdoor workouts to take advantage of those lovely days, no matter how few and far between.

Run

Going for a run is a great outdoor workout that you can do year around, no matter the temperatures, as long as the pavement conditions are good. Even on cooler spring days, you can layer up and go for a jog. Aim for at least 30 minutes. If you aren’t there yet, many apps and

programs can help you build your endurance and reach the 30-minute mark.

Power Walk

Like running, heading out for a power walk is an easy way to fit in an outdoor workout, no matter the weather. And studies have found that power walking has the same health benefits as running with less stress on your joints.

Hike

As long as the terrain isn’t iced over, there’s no reason you can’t bundle up and go for a hike on cooler spring days. Hiking is considered a weight-bearing exercise that can help you build muscles and protect your bones from osteoporosis as you age.

Ride a Bike

Going for a bike ride in cooler weather can be done, but when it starts to get nice out is when bike riding really becomes fun. Going for a bike ride is a fun, low-impact way to get the whole family involved in cardiovascular exercise.

Jump Rope

Another activity that is fun for the whole family is jumping rope. Sure, you can do so on your own for intense cardio, but making it a game that involves the entire family is a great way to spend time outside, bond, and get in your cardio.

Play Outdoor Games

As soon as the cold weather breaks, outdoor games commence. Games like golf and disc golf are perfect for spring, and the amount of walking they require allow you to get your daily steps in. You can make these a family affair and take the kids or opt to play frisbee, toss a baseball, throw a football, or shoot basketball with the kids to get in your daily movement.
